The Cobra Unit is a Special Forces unit led by The Boss. Its members include The End, a venerable expert sniper credited as the 'father of modern sniping'; The Fear, who has supernatural flexibility and agility; The Fury, a disfigured former cosmonaut armed with a flamethrower and a jetpack; The Pain, who can control hornets to both defend himself and attack his enemies; and The Sorrow, the spirit of a deceased medium. During the Virtuous Mission in 1964, the Cobras recapture Dr. Sokolov for Colonel Volgin after The Boss defects to the USSR.

In Their Own Story

In 1964, during the Virtuous Mission in Tselinoyarsk, USSR, CIA agent Naked Snake is tasked with rescuing Dr. Nikolai Sokolov. The mission falls apart when The Boss defects to the USSR, and her Cobra Unit recaptures Sokolov for their new benefactor, Colonel Volgin. The Boss then defeats Snake in close combat, injuring him and leaving him for dead. Volgin uses a Davy Crockett nuclear shell supplied by The Boss to destroy the Shagohod's research facility and cover up the theft.
